Marching into Spring…

Now that Spring has approached us, the warm weather is constantly reminding me of what is to come: Summer 2012. After turning 30 and having my second child last year, I don’t know if I am looking forward to Summer with the same anticipation as I have in the years before. I confessed this to some of my staff, and was surprised by how many of them felt the same way. That’s when a light bulb went off…

As the founder of Valina, I feel as though I have a duty to uphold a lifestyle built on health, wellness and beauty. When my staff confessed their concerns to me about their body images in concern to their health, I knew right away this is probably something many women face and can be a embarrassed or shy to admit. Let me tell you, there is no reason to!

For the last two weeks, I have been making a conscious effort to fit in an exercise regimen of 1.5 hours for 4 days a week. This isn’t easy, I, like you, have a hectic schedule as well. With 2 businesses, a young family, finding an hour and a half of free time is not only borderline impossible, but even a little disheartening to me. However, I have done it.

In addition to the exercise, I have implemented a few other wellness treatments to the spa to help me look and feel like I’m still in my 20′s! I am now beginning a mandatory bi weekly regimen of:

  • Slimming, firming, seaweed body mask, which reduces cellulite and is super hydrating, and serves as a detox.
  • Sunless spray tan, to prepare my sun kissed bronze without the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays
  • Weekly conditioning treatments to restore the health of my hair during this shocking change my body is experiencing

With these small changes, I hope to see I huge difference! I am already noticing a change with the aid of a healthy diet and religious exercise. I hope you all will find inspiration from my story, this is why I am offering these services and more in our spotlight for this week!

Let me know how it goes…

Answering a great beauty question from a client

So last week I put myself in a vulnerable position and told all of you about the unwanted wrinkles I have discovered around my eye area. To give you an update, I am doing everything according to plan and the little lines are smoothing out; they are not yet completely gone but they most definitely look better than they did a week ago.

I asked you guys to write to me and tell me about what’s bothering you about your esthetics. Here is a letter I received from one of our clients looking to find out if a serum is really necessary:

“Dear Nina,

I am a 32 year old female and like you recently started to see wrinkles and lines on my face, especially around the eyes and lips. I currently use a cleanser, moisturizer, and a facial mask once a week. I recently added an SPF 30 moisturizer from the Image Skincare daily defense line to use every morning, but was wondering if I need to add a serum. I see that serums are in almost every skin line and just don’t understand why I would need one. Your advice is really appreciated, thank you.

Sincerely,

M”

Dear M,

Thank you so much for writing to me. In your list of daily products you did not mention an eye cream. I would definitely suggest using an eyecream with plenty of pepetides and organic argan oil to moisturize and smooth fine lines around the delicate eye area.

As for your question on serums, in my professional opinion using a serum at least once a day in the evening is an absolutely essential step to maintaining and enhancing your skin tone and health. Usually a good serum will contain the same ingredients as the moisturizer/creme, however the serum’s molecular structure is much smaller and the ingredients can therefore reach the deeper layers of your skin that a moisturizer simply cannot. Serums are also great for oily skin because they deposit nutrients and almost no hydration, which is why you need to follow with a moisturizer if your skin is anything but oily.

Please remember that you always want to apply your serum after the toner and before your moisturizer.

Hope this helps.

Wrinkles…NOT ME!

This past Tuesday I decided to get my eyelashes permed by our lovely Esthetician, Ella. We wanted to do before and afters so I asked our stylist, Stephanie, to take some pictures. Once my lashes were done– and they look awesome, by the way– I looked at the picture Steph took and GASP! there were wrinkles under my eyes.

Oh boy was that a revelation I was not prepared for. I immediately began to regret all those days as a teenager by the pool and in my 20′s at the Jersey shore. I regret everyday I was too lazy to put on the sunscreen and the couple of times I went to the tanning salon.

However now that I’ve had a couple of days to absorb this news,

I am prepared to fight this wrinkle war tooth and nail.

Here is my list of things I will start doing immediately:

1. Go back to an all vegetable, fish and fruit diet for at least two weeks (I’m not what you would call a vegetarian, but I do stick mostly to fresh, raw foods so this should not be so hard)

2. Get an Ageless Facial with Ella

3. Do a six month series of peels, every 2-3 weeks

4. Start using the Green Science Firming Eye Cream from AVEDA on a daily basis (see this week’s product spotlight)

5. Use an SPF each and every single day, no matter what I’m doing

I’m confident that with a good plan and some discipline my wrinkles will be a worry of the past and my under-eye area will be as smooth as a baby’s bottom come this Summer. Write to me and let me know what is bothering you about your skin or hair and I promise to address your issues in future newsletters.

As always, I thank you for your continued loyalty and support! Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours!

What Valentine’s Day means to me

I am probably the least romantic person you have ever met. I don’t like flowers–think they’re a waste of money, I’m not a big fan of chocolate nor do I have any affinity toward French restaurants.

But this time in February means the world to me. My husband and I were married on February 14. Ironically, two of the most unromantic people decided to take the most romantic plunge on the most romantic day of the year. On February 15th, 2011 fate would have it so that Valina Salon & Day Spa officially opened for business. My baby boy was born only a few short weeks after.

As I sit here reflecting on what Valentine’s Day and this time of the year really means to me, I realize that I’m not that different after all. I realize that it probably means the same thing to me as it does to everyone else: Love. To love, to be able to love, to allow others to love you, and to do for a living what you love is a beautiful thing that we should all be reminded to stop, reflect and celebrate.

I’ll sign off by quoting the famous poet Euripedes, “Love is all we have, the only way that each can help the other.” May we all allow the passion we have in our hearts to drive us to do good for our neighbors and to ultimately make our world a place of love and compassion.

As always, I thank you for your continued loyalty and support! Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours!

Discounted Membership Program!

I am trying a radically different experiment for Valina, that I think our guests will greatly benefit from. It’s a true wellness model, one that encourages clients to come more frequently to experience true wellness. Remember that guy Hippocrates? Yeah, the first true “doctor.” He said the way to health was through an aromatic massage and bath every day. Well, why can’t we resurrect that old model? I know, I know, we’re busy, not enough time, not enough money.
So I thought of a way to make wellness more affordable…I created a membership program that provides a hefty discount on all spa treatments. There will be two levels of membership $55 per month or $100 per month.

At the $55 per month level you get a 35 min Facial, 30 min Swedish Massage or a Haircut, every month. PLUS 10% off Products AND $20 Birthday Gift Card, in addition to double points for Pre-Booking.

At the $99 per month level you get a 50 min Valina Classic Facial or a 50 min Swedish, Deep Tissue or Hot Stone Massage. PLUS 20% off all Waxing and Nail Appointments, 10% off Products, 2 blowouts/month at only $20 AND $30 Birthday Gift Card, in addition to double points for Pre-Booking.

At these prices, my hope is that people can afford to come 1-2x every month, creating true well-being and really getting the benefits they need to get out of going to a wellness spa.

There will also be members-only services that others are not privy to – I am having a great deal of fun designing them as I write this (almost gleeful). We will see how it goes – this could either be the greatest thing since sliced bread, or I not. But nothing risked is nothing gained, so I am moving forward bravely with this plan. I would definitely be interested in hearing anyone’s feedback on it!

As always, I thank you for your continued loyalty and support! Have a beautiful week!

Happy Sunday!

We all know how dangerous UVA & UVB rays are, and yet all logic goes out the door when we want to look a little healthier or to add a little color to the skin– especially during the dreary months of winter. As an esthetician treating countless clients on their skin concerns, I have seen first-hand the devastation that comes from “a little color from the rays.”

UV rays, no matter UVA or UVB, cause sustainable skin cell damage, premature skin aging (wrinkles, lax skin, brown spots, & more) and Melanoma (skin cancer). In fact, indoor ultraviolet (UV) tanners are 74% more likely to develop melanoma than those who have never tanned indoors.

Did you know that you should still wear at least SPF 15 even on a cloudy day if you plan on going outside or being in the car? Same goes for your little ones playing outside, even when it’s cold and not too sunny (kids should really wear at least SPF 30-45).

Here is the good news: You can still get that perfect bronzed glow with airbrush spray tanning. A lot of traditional tanning salons now offer spray tanning. Make sure you find out about the quality of the spray tan used on you before you get sprayed. Our professional Airbrush Tanning artists wield advanced technology to custom craft full-body airbrush tans. During each session, our artists use a steady hand to paint a natural, bronze sheen without the use of UV rays or external dimmer switches. The 100% paraben-free, organic formula, firms and tones as it brightens and deepens the color of your skin. You will keep glowing for up to 10 days.

As always, I thank you for your continued loyalty and support! Have a beautiful week!

New Year, Same Mission!

Ever since the very idea of owning a salon and day spa emerged in my head over 6 years ago, it has been my sole mission to bring to my guests and my team only the very best the beauty industry has to offer. So it is with this mission in mind that I am very excited to introduce to you the newest addition to our family: hairstylist and makeup artist Candice (formerly of Voi Salon & Spa in East Brunswick). Candice has over a decade of experience and education in both hair and makeup artistry, but it is her talent and her passion coupled with a positive, down to earth outlook that make her an ideal Valina team member.

As always, I thank you for your continued loyalty and support! Have a beautiful week!
